Tom Suozzi

U.S. Congress

Project Description

Overview
When George Santos was expelled from Congress, a nationally-important special election was called for NY-3, which covered parts of Nassau County and Northeast Queens. It was an area New York Republicans had dominated in recent cycles – Santos had won the seat a year earlier by double-digits (as did the Republican candidate for Governor).

Democrats chose our friend and client, Tom Suozzi, to be the standard-bearer. Even though Suozzi had represented the district before Santos, electoral trends gave the Republicans great confidence and they selected a popular legislator to compete for the seat.

Our Approach
We knew Suozzi had a strong brand and a message of independence and political moderation that would resonate in the toss-up district. Our mail program burnished Suozzi’s bonafides as someone who would work across party lines to deliver for Nassau and Queens. We did contrast mail to make voters question the readiness of the Republican candidate, while targeting various subgroups based on religion, geography, and ethnic demographics.
The Result
For the first time in recent election cycles, we ended the Republican dominance on Long Island. Our mail program helped propel Suozzi to an 8-point victory, giving the Democratic Party its mojo back and creating a blueprint for success in purple districts across the country.
